It was learnt that the incident occurred on Tuesday morning during a shoot-out along the Ogbia-Nembe road in Nembe Local Government Area of the state.
The development was said to have thrown the residents of the roadside between the Opume Junction area of Ogbia LGA and the Bassanbiri/Ogbolomabiri area of Nembe into pandemonium.
An eyewitness said the soldiers, who were attached as security details to personnel of a construction company were ambushed.
“The soldiers guarding the construction company’s personnel on the site came under heavy attack from the bush. It was an ambush and before they could know what was happening, the gunmen opened fire on them. It was a surprise attack,” the eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said.
Some of the Indigenes of Nembe, who were returning to Yenagoa en-route Opume road, were said to be caught in the early morning shoot-out.
A Hilux (utility vehicle) driver, identified simply as Monday, said, “It was like a movie scene. The soldiers were shooting and the gunmen were also shooting.
“We later saw signs of blood everywhere when the soldiers removed their blood soaked colleague. The soldiers were able to rescue some expatriates from being abducted by the gunmen.”

But the Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, OPS, Col. Ado Isa, denied knowledge of the incident.

What does Buhari want in Ekiti?

What does Buhari want in Ekiti?

It sounded unbelievable at first. The administration of change, which claims to run on strict adherence to rule of law, was accused to have approved invasion of the Ekiti Assembly complex. Its stout supporters balked at the accusation. It was impossible for the federal government to allow such illegal operation take place, they claimed.
Ekiti State Government had claimed many lawmakers were arrested and whisked away to Abuja after the clandestine operations. Days later, facts emerged that at least one lawmaker, Afolabi Akanni, was in the custody of Department of State Security (DSS).
This was after initial denials by the service. The DSS said it neither carried out the raid nor arrested any lawmaker as alleged. Akanni was eventually released from custody without any explanation as to why he was arrested or detained. He was only released after Governor Ayo Fayose alleged the lawmaker had died in custody.
Last Wednesday, 11 of the 25 lawmakers fled the state. They appeared to in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State to claim they fled following threats of arrests by the federal government.
The Deputy Speaker, Segun Adewunmi, told reporters: “We assembled here and decided to leave Ekiti. As at now, the governor cannot find any member of the House of Assembly. As we are here talking, others are out of the state.
“No amount of intimidation, arrest, detention, harassment and monetary inducement will make us dance to the tune of those whose only interest is to truncate the Fayose-led government and return to power through the backdoor.
“We have come here to alert the public about the new clandestine plot of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to cripple the government of Ekiti State”.
Clearly, it appears the federal government is out for something in Ekiti State. Some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have alleged there are plans to induce and intimidate the lawmakers to initiate impeachment plots against Fayose.

Ikeja exits labour talks to safeguard service excellence...

Ikeja Electric has discontinuedtalks with Labour over the recent disengagement of workers, stating that the negotiation was tending towards a proposition that would jeopardise transparency, employee performance and service excellence to customers.

Last month, Labour had picketed the electricity distribution company for three days over the disengagement of workers who failed to meet the company's performance objectives and were deemed to be performing below standard. However, the picketing was suspended after Ikeja Electric reached an agreement with the National Union of Electricity Workers (NUEE) and Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to set up a committee to review the performance appraisal and competency assessment process.

I have not celebrated any festive period with my family since 1979 –Funmi Aragbaye

Funmi Aragbaye
Ademola Olonilua and Eric Dumo
For about three decades ace gospel singer, Funmi Aragbaye, has entertained Nigerians across the world with her sonorous voice and good music. Unknown to many, it comes with a price tag and it is at the expense of her family.
In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, the iconic singer said that because the demand for her services is always at its peak during festive seasons, she has not been able to spend quality time with her family ever since her ministry started.
Simply put, during festivities like Christmas and Easter, when most people would be in the warm embrace of their loved ones, she does not have such luxury and her children often complain.
She said, “I hardly have time to take my family out because I have a very tight schedule due to the nature of my job. I cannot decline my clients’ request whenever they want to book me for a show because it is a festive season and I want to take my family out. For me, the festive period is usually the most demanding. In fact, the last time I took my family out to have fun was in 1979. Ever since I began my music ministration, I do not have time for such anymore. In those days when my children were young and they normally complained a lot but I was lucky that when I went into the music ministry fully, my children were already grown except for my last child. He was about three years old back then. They complained a lot when they were young but as they began to grow, they understood and accepted the nature of my job.

Fidelity Bank backs export promotion drive

Fidelity Bank Plc has partnered the Lagos Business School and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council to boost human capital development for export promotion.
The programme, tagged Export Management Programme, is aimed at training Nigerian exporters in order to accelerate the nation’s export.
At a joint news conference involving the partners in Lagos recently, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Fidelity Bank, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, stressed the need to diversify the Nigerian economy and boost non-oil export.
This, he said, would help to save the naira from the increasing value erosion.
He said, “We are here on how we can drive export business in the country. We want to achieve this through collaboration with the Nigeria Export Promotion Council and the Lagos Business School under the platform of the Export Management Programme.
“Foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria are largely from oil exports; it accounts for over 90 per cent of total receipts. The current currency debacle hinges on supply side dynamics having lost over 70 per cent of our dollar revenues in the last 18 months due to the falling crude oil prices.”
